Chris Heenan (Washington D.C., * 1969) is an active musician and organizer of experimental music. He performs on various reed instruments and has created works for live analog electronics, sound installations and for radio. Heenan is involved in a variety of collaborative projects investigating new musical forms in which improvisation is often a component.
Some current active projects include the collaboration Funkloch with sound and light artist Michael Vorfeld, a performative sound and light installation transmitted by radio; PIVOT, a duo with Liz Allbee for trumpet and contrabass clarinet of improvised recursive structures; Allerdings, a radio arts and performance group with sound artist Antje Vowinckel that has created a series of works for Deutschlandradio Kultur; and Trigger, a wind trio with Matthias Müller and Nils Ostendorf involved in diverse projects as both an independent trio and in collaboration with invited electronic artists (Trigger Plus) and sound and video installations (Going Underground). In addition to these projects, Heenan performs with international musicians such as Axel Dörner, Sven-Åke Johansson, Jonas Kocher, Olivier Toulemonde and Ute Wassermann. He is also a member of Berlin’s Splitter Orchester.
As a curator of musical events and concerts, Heenan co-founded line space line (2002–2005), a new and improvised music series in Los Angeles that produced over 120 concerts and two festivals; has organized events at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles and The Santa Monica Museum of Art; and currently curates the music and sound salon Certain Sundays in Berlin, inviting internationally renowned musicians and sound artists to present and discuss their work.
